What happens after you register a Singapore company: the first twelve months explained

Registering a company with ACRA is the fastest part of setting up in Singapore, and it is the part most providers advertise. It is also the part that matters least. What follows over the next twelve months — corporate banking, accounting, the first tax filing, pass applications, the annual return — is where foreign founders most often lose time and money.

Month one: banking is the real bottleneck

A Singapore company without a corporate bank account cannot operate. Account opening is a compliance exercise, not a formality, and banks assess the substance of your business, the residency of your directors and the source of your funds.

Months two to three: accounting and tax registration

Your financial year end is a decision, not a default. Choosing it carelessly can compress your first filing deadline and cost you the tax exemptions available to new companies.

Months four to nine: people and passes

If a foreign founder or employee needs to work in Singapore, an Employment Pass application follows its own timeline and evidentiary standard. It is assessed on qualifications, salary and the role, and it is not guaranteed.

Months ten to twelve: the annual cycle begins

Annual return, AGM and corporate tax filing all arrive together. Companies that treated incorporation as the finish line discover the year-one compliance load at exactly the wrong moment.
